Learning Support (LS)

Learning Support is an additional tuition given to pupils needing supplementary teaching to reach the required level. Many pupils are benefitting from short or long term LS-tuition. The progress of LS-pupils is evaluated regularly. LS may be offered individually or for small groups in the same year level. New pupils who cannot follow the language courses, L1 and L2, can receive additional support to reach the required standard.

S1-S3 have Learning Support courses in two of the subjects (L1, L2 and Mathematics) timetabled in fixed lessons. As the timetables are complex it is not always possible to avoid clashes between the LS lessons and normal lessons.

Under certain circumstances LS may also be offered in other subjects, e.g. personal organisation in years 1 and 2, or specifically tailored courses for pupils with dyslexia and dyscalculia.

How is a pupil registered for LS?
When a teacher notices that a pupil needs extra tuition, he contacts the LS-coordinator, who then adds the pupil in to an already existing LS-group, or initiates a new group.

When LS has been approved and a teacher has been assigned, the parents will be informed through a note in the Liaison Book, which they then need to sign in agreement. The difficulty of combining pupil, teacher and year group timetables may mean that the timing of the LS-lessons is not always ideal.

How long does a LS-course last?
The duration of the courses varies. Some are held for the whole school year, others only for a few weeks. For example, an intensive course for scientific vocabulary only lasts a short time. Continuous feedback between the LS-teacher, the subject teacher and the LS-coordinator means that courses may be prolonged or terminated as appropriate.

Is the attendance at LS-lessons compulsory?
The participation in Learning Support lessons is optional and not compulsory. However, once pupils have agreed to take part, they must attend all lessons and actively participate. This requires parental encouragement and support. A large number of unauthorised absences will lead to termination of the pupil’s right to LS.

How are the LS-pupils assessed?
At the end of a term or course the Learning Support and subject teachers pass their assessments of each pupil’s progress to the LS-coordinator who may be contacted by the parents wishing to see this information.
