Comenius
Project coordinators: Teresa Bertolino, Karin Nykiel and Carolyne Ardron

Under the slogan “Teenagers in Europe - different places, common faces” the European School Munich takes part in a multilateral Comenius-School-Partnership-Programme. This programme is funded by the European Union and promotes the exchange of pupils and teachers across national borders.

The aim of this joint project is to encourage the cooperation between pupils and teachers through intercultural learning and raising awareness of the concept of a European dimension . Broadening horizons, getting to know people from other countries and communicating through the three target European languages of English, French and German is a primary goal for students and teachers involved.

By visiting other places and through project work, students and teachers have the opportunity to get to know other European countries more closely and to make new friends with students from partner schools. In this way, understanding of other cultures is developed, thus paving the way for new perspectives and ideas. The project helps students to strengthen their own cultural and social European identity and also to challenge stereotypes and prejudices.

Not only is the participants’ understanding of cultural differences deepened, but the many similarities are highlighted to raise awareness of racism and injustice. In addition, interest in other languages is promoted by communicating with one another. Intercultural dialogue takes place during the scheduled exchange trips and in class through the school year.

The project is linked to many specific teaching contents of the curriculum in order to give as many students as possible the chance to participate in the project. Participants are in a continuous and lively exchange – often even after the actual project has already been completed – by meeting each other in person and/or by staying in touch through various electronic media: e-mails, chats and video conferences.

“Teenagers in Europe - different places, common faces” focuses on the theme of “Youth Culture”. Aspects which are examined in this context include young people and their social lives and their relationships with friends and adults (at school, in the family, etc.).

Other topics on the agenda include sports, films, music, dance, literature, fashion and beauty as well as themes that capture young people’s imagination such as politics, sexuality and drug use prevention.
