Federal Competition of Foreign Languages/Individual Competition
Project Leader: Andrea Wohlers
This competition belongs to the nationwide recognised competitions and originated in 1979, brought to life by the “Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft ”, the German Scientific Foundation. As part of the scholarship programme for outstanding pupils, the federal government aims to encourage pupils to study foreign languages more intensely. The individual competition (EW1 for year 9, EW2 for year 10 in the German school system) is aimed at years 4 and 5 of the secondary school. At level B1 of the European reference framework, oral and written exams take place on the competition day. These include: reading aloud, the ability to express oneself freely, to demonstrate reading skills and listening comprehension, answer questions on cultural and regional topics as well as being creative. In 2011, the overall theme in the English language competition was “ Australia", in the French language competition it was “ Francophonie ”, and the participants whose language of competition was Spanish had to know all about “ Andalusia ”. The deadline for application is always in October of each calendar year. The languages in which the competitions are held include English, French, Latin, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Swedish and Check and as 2 nd language also Classical Greek, Turkish and Chinese. German does not feature as a competition language. Apart from prize money one can also win travels and take part in the language tournament, the federal level of the individual competition. In the month of September the winners of the Germany wide competition compete against each other.
